Survivor Series Champion vs Champion Format Overview

Survivor Series is one week away and for the second year in a row will be going with a Champion vs Champion theme. Although WWE’s busy October did not leave much time to promote the card, the format for Survivor Series arguably has brought the PPV back into the fold as one of the Big 4 – or Big 5 if you can’t Money in the Bank as bigger.

With WWE’s main roster having two brands, Survivor Series is now something of a one-night playoff to determine who the best in each division is. The best male single’s wrestler in WWE will be determined by the Universal Champion vs WWE Champion match. The best female single’s wrestler will be determined when the champion’s of each brand square off and so on. Unfortunately, the significance of winning a champion vs champion match at Survivor Series does not yet seem to come with any type of acknowledgment of an accomplishment. This could possibly be as a result of WWE not wanting to diminish the value of the loser’s title.

The addition of a trophy given to the winner seems like it would make a world of difference, however.

Let’s look at the results of Survivor Series 2017 to see who comes into this year’s PPV as the defending champion of champions.

Survivor Series 2017 Champion vs Champion Matches:

  • Universal Champion vs WWE Champion
Brock Lesnar (Universal Champion) defeated AJ Styles (WWE Champion)
  • Smackdown Women’s Champions vs Raw Women’s Champions
Charlotte Flair (SD Champion) defeated Alexa Bliss (Raw Champion)
  • Smackdown Tag Team Champions vs Raw Tag Team Champions
The Usos  (Smackdown Champions) defeated the Bar (Raw Champions)
  • United States Champion vs Intercontinental Champion
Baron Corbin (US Champion) defeated the Miz (Intercontinental Champion)

Champion of Champions: Brock Lesnar (Men’s Single’s), Charlotte Flair (Female Single’s), the Usos (Tag Team), Baron Corbin (mid-card).

We will have one rematch this year: Brock Lesnar vs AJ Styles. The Bar also return to a Champions vs Champions match for the second year in a row despite switching brands. Charlotte Flair lost her spot in the Survivor Series champion vs champion match after losing and failing to regain the Smackdown title from Becky Lynch.

2018 Survivor Series Champion vs Champion Matches

  • Universal Champion vs WWE Champion
Brock Lesnar (Universal Champion) vs. AJ Styles (WWE Champion)
  • Smackdown Women’s Champions vs Raw Women’s Champions
Becky Lynch (SD Champion) vs Ronda Rousey (Raw Champion)
  • Smackdown Tag Team Champions vs Raw Tag Team Champions
The Bar  (Smackdown Champions) vs the Authors of Pain (Raw Champions)
  • United States Champion vs Intercontinental Champion
Shinsuke Nakamura (US Champion) vs Seth Rollins (Intercontinental Champion)

Authors Of Pain Win Raw Tag Team Championships

The AOP may have won the titles by defeating just Seth Rollins but they are tag champs nonetheless. In 2-on-2 televised matches on the main roster, the AOP are a perfect 16-0. They dropped a triple threat tag match two weeks ago to Chad Gable and Bobby Roode, however, with the Ascension being the other team. Neither Akam nor Razar has been pinned or submitted on the main roster.

Here are the teams AOP has defeated since debuting on Raw this April: Heath Slater and Rhyno 2x, Francois & Jean-Paul (local Montreal team), Titus Worldwide 5x, Breezeango, Rex Gibson & Rich Gibson, Jimmy James & Keith Thompson, Nathan Bradley & Ronnie Ace, Barrett Brown & Gregory James, The Conquistador, Seth Rollins without Dean Ambrose.

Drew McIntyre Destroys Kurt Angle To Close Raw

It’s been a rough November for Kurt Angle. He was beaten in the first round of the World Cup by Dolph Ziggler and then tapped out to his own submission on Monday. Drew McIntyre ran through Angle in Monday’s main event, further evidence that McIntyre seems destined to fall into the Universal title picture at some point sooner rather than later.

Angle responded to a Q&A on Facebook recently on Facebook saying he wants to wrestle more consistently but he is unsure what the future holds for his wrestling career.

“I don’t know,” Angle responded. “I do want to wrestle more, I just started wrestling again so it’s going to take a few matches before I get the kinks out, especially being older now. I’m hoping I get a little bit more consistent wrestling in the future. Either way, I love contributing. We will see.”

Mustafa Ali To Challenge Buddy Murphy At Survivor Series

In the month since Buddy Murphy won the title from Cedric Alexander at Super Show-Down, several other contenders have been vying for the next title shot. Alexander was defeated by Murphy’s training partner, Tony Nese, on the Tuesday after losing the title. Nese then won a fatal 5-way match to solidify his spot at the top of the cruiserweight rankings the following week. Meanwhile, Mustafa Ali cruised through October as well. He defeated rival Hideo Itami in a Falls Count Anywhere match before beating Tony Nese in single’s competition to earn the title shot at Survivor Series.

What’s Going On With Charlotte Flair?/ What’s Going On With Mandy Rose?

After Evolution, Charlotte Flair said she wasn’t sure about being the Smackdown team captain after having lost to Lynch at HIAC and Evolution. Paige seems intent on having her on the team, however.

This week when Paige was introducing the teams, Mandy Rose came out instead. Rose ran down the rest of the team, including her ally Sonya Deville, who she eliminated from the Evolution battle royal.

Nia Jax Aligns With Tamina

Nia Jax defeated Ember Moon this week on Raw. Jax has a title shot owed to her after winning the Evolution battle royal. Jax and Rousey have faced each other before at Money in the Bank this year. It looked as though Rousey was about to tear Jax’s arm off and win the Raw Women’s Championship but Alexa Bliss cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase and defeated Jax for the title after having taken Rousey out.

Perhaps because Jax has been in the ring with Rousey before, she’s opted to bring in a little outside help. Tamina beat down Ember Moon after a post-match run-in Monday night. Jax then joined in with Tamina and confirmed the two powerhouses are now aligned on Monday nights. When Rousey is done with Lynch in the Champions vs Champions match at Survivor Series, she now has both Tamina and Jax to worry about next.

Mark Henry and Titus O’Neil Comment On Mark Henry

Both Mark Henry and Titus O’Neil commented on Hulk Hogan this week. Henry spelled out some of what Hogan will have to do to redeem himself to Heavy:

“I wasn’t going to roll out the red carpet and start going to have dinner with him if he wasn’t willing to do all the s**t that I said he needed to do,” Henry told Heavy. “To start, he needs to go to some of these black universities, to these law students and let them grill him and own it and apologize. Not because you got caught, but apologize because you honestly feel remorse. He said that he found God and he touched my heart when he said that, because I know what God will do, so if God touched him, God will also say speak up, and when you reveal your past, you can go on in the future and I still don’t think he’s still completely revealed it.”

Titus O’Neil also commented to Sky Sports on Hogan’s appearance at Crown Jewel:

“It’s not my decision who goes where, I support whatever decision the company goes with. But at the same time we are all independent thinkers; I have no ill will towards Hulk Hogan whatsoever. He’s a part of the WWE family and as a part of the WWE family we embrace him and we’ll make whatever we have to work, work.”

“Him going over to Saudi Arabia was a decision that was made solely on the basis of being entertaining and I know the princes and the fans over there ate it up. They wanted him over there before too and it was good for the fans there to see him and for him to get that rush of the crowd.”

The Riott Squad Break Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart Sunglasses

A match pitting the Riott Squad against Natalya and the Hug N Boss Connection ended in a no-contest this week. Ruby Riott brought the match to a close by snatching Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart’s sunglasses which Natalya had brought to ringside and breaking them. The match then stopped due to “emotional turmoil” and was ruled a no-contest.

Other News and Notes

  • Zelina Vega is out with a concussion right now. She is believed to have suffered the injury during the Evolution battle royal.
  • No word on how much longer Bliss will be out for but the word is her missing Survivor Series (she’s managing the Raw women’s team) is precautionary.
