Hiroshi Tanahashi Retains, Gedo Turns On Okada

Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kazuchika Okada in the main event of Destruction in Kobe on Sunday. It was the first time in four years he managed to defeat Okada. The loss is significant for Okada, who is removed from the Tokyo Dome main event picture for the first time in 5 years.

The closing moments of the Destruction tour could not have been more chaotic. Following Tanahashi’s victory, Jay White attacked both Tanahashi and Okada. White had been at odds with his CHAOS stablemates seemingly ever since aligning with them. Yoshi-Hashi made the save after stumbling headfirst into the ring and busting himself open. Gedo then turned on Okada, hitting him with a chair. White and Gedo are now aligned, both have turned on CHAOS. Gedo said it was the beginning of “the Switchblade Era.”

Gedo and White challenged Tanahashi to a match for the G1 briefcase, which likely will take place at King of Pro Wrestling on October 8th.

As for IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega, it’s not clear if he will defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship between now and WrestleKingdom. He told his tag-team partner Kota Ibushi, he’d face him “anytime anywhere” but Ibushi doesn’t appear to be taking him up on the offer. If nothing changes, the WrestleKingdom main event next year will be Kenny Omega defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi. That ends a 4-year run where Okada main event’ed the show, having won the last 3 of them.

KUSHIDA Advances To Junior Heavyweight Tourney Final

Kushida will face the winner of Will Ospreay vs Marty Scurll at Fighting Spirit Unleashed. He defeated Bushi on the Destruction in Kobe show. Kushida worked Bushi’s arm for much of the match but wasn’t able to make his opponent tap. Bushi spit poison mist in Kushida’s face but Kushida kicked out of that and hit Back to the Future twice in succession before getting the pinfall.

Tiger Mask and Jushin Liger To Challenge For Junior Heavyweight Tag Titles?

Tiger Mask and Jushin Liger were victorious over Kanemaru and Desperado in Kobe. They then challenged the champs to a title match and are awaiting a response. It’s likely we get that match on October 8th at King of Pro Wrestling but that has yet to be confirmed.

Jeff Cobb Booked For Long Beach Show

Jeff Cobb revealed recently on X-Pac’s podcast that he’s booked with NJPW at the upcoming Long Beach show on September 30th.

“They haven’t announced me yet but I will be at the Long Beach show on the 30th,” Cobb said. “I’m not at liberty to say what else I’m doing with them the rest of the year but I will be hopefully more on New Japan World and all that fun stuff.”

It looks as though we will be seeing more of Cobb in both Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling.
