Kenny Omega and Cody: Is Animosity Building Between Them?

On the surface, Kenny Omega and Cody are teammates….

At first glance, Cody and Kenny Omega are two of Bullet Club’s most successful single’s stars. In the almost 5-year history of the faction, that is no small task either. Some of the world’s most talented wrestlers have gone through Barettokurabu.

Dissension between the two lurks ominously in the background, however.

This isn’t the first time competitiveness between Bullet Club members has bubbled to the surface either. One need only reflect back on Adam Cole’s short run with the faction as evidence of this.

Cole’s situation was different than what is brewing between Cody and Omega, however. When Omega officially declared him fired, Cole had already attempted to fire the Young Bucks from the faction. This wasn’t going to fly with the rest of Bullet Club, especially members of the Elite. Cole wrote his own ticket out of the faction, but that is not what is occurring here.

Sponsorship with BrandiT

On an episode of “Being the Elite”, a placebo-drunken Kenny Omega broke down and admitted to having concern over how some members of the faction have been acting. He continued to spiral until sobering up just minutes later.

Omega appeared to have written the name “Brandi” on his wrist tape in a not-actually-drunken stupor, seemingly confessing a secret love for Cody’s wife, Brandi Rhodes. It turns out this was all a misunderstanding, however, as Omega had recently signed a lucrative contract with the company “BrandiT”.

An earlier story on this website went into further detail in regards to Omega’s deal with the precious metals and branding company. Omega is said to enjoy both presious metals and branding as a hobby when he is not wrestling.

Cody and Omega also got into an argument backstage at the NJPW Special in Los Angeles this summer. While it appeared this would be the catalyst for an inter-faction rivalry, the two seemingly patched things up privately.

Perhaps, Cody and Omega’s sense of Bullet Club comradery was strengthened when their teammate, Hangman Page, was kidnapped shortly after.

Civil War Brewing

An earlier story on this website covered the dispute between Tama Tonga and Kenny Omega during this year’s G1 tournament. While the two members would make up following their round-robin match, Tonga expressed disdain over Omega referring to himself and the Young Bucks as “the Elite”.

Tonga is a founding member of Bullet Club and expressed that Omega needed to be more respectful of the entire faction, not just his circle within it.

A unique feature of Bullet Club is the mini-cliques which exist within the larger group. The wrestlers who are predominantly ROH based such as Cody, Hangman Page, the Young Bucks, tend to all hang-out at the Crackle Barrel together. Then there is a separate faction with Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and Leo Tonga. That sub-faction appears to be growing as well. Bad Luck Fale recently introduced a new member to the group while seemingly coining the name “Bullet Club Down Under”.

Cody Facing Kota Ibushi at WrestleKingdom

Following Power Struggle 2017, Cody challenged Kota Ibushi to a match at WrestleKingdom. Ibushi and Omega are former tag-team partners in “the Golden Lovers”. They seem to have a rather up-and-down relationship.

At Invasion Attack 2015, Kota Ibushi challenged AJ Styles for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. He earned the title shot by winning the New Japan Cup that year. At the end of the match, Omega (who had come to ringside) stood on the ring apron and provided a momentary distraction to Ibushi. It was all Styles needed to turn the tide of the match and retain his title. Omega’s facial expressions conveyed he was not happy to have cost Ibushi the match but did what he had to do.

The following year Omega would be critical of Ibushi’s participation in WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic, but otherwise, it appears the two have been steering clear of each other. Cody’s challenge to his former tag-team partner, however, could potentially elicit a response from Omega.

2018 is shaping up to be an interesting year for Bullet Club.
