At New Beginning in Osaka, Kazuchika Okada once again defended his IWGP Heavyweight Championship. It was his 10th title defense of this reign (23rd of all time). One more and Okada will tie Tanahashi’s record of 11 title defenses. Okada is still 5 combined title defenses short of Tanahashi’s record of 28, however.
Saturday in Osaka, not only did Okada defeat LIJ’s SANADA, his CHAOS faction defeated LIJ in 4 out of 5 singles matches including all 3 championship matches.
Kazuchika Okada Challenges CHAOS Stablemate
Following the main event, Okada gave his post-match address. He noted that on the NJPW Anniversary Show March 5th all the heavyweights would be busy preparing for the New Japan Cup. Therefore, it’s the perfect opportunity for him to face the Junior Heavyweight Champion, Will Ospreay.
Earlier in the evening, Ospreay had defeated Hiromu Takahashi to retain the title. It was his first successful title defense.
At the post-match press conference, Ospreay wondered if the CHAOS leader was testing him but he thanked Okada and accepted the challenge.
